The Pastor's View

On Sunday I told the story of how at the end of a sermon recently I asked for people to raise their hand if they knew they needed to give their lives to Christ...and how one of our Connection Group Leaders noticed the hand raised by a class member. So when the service was over, he grabbed another member of that Connection Group (who happens to be a new Christian himself) and the two of them sat down with their friend for a conversation that concluded when that man prayed to receive Christ! Once they had prayed, these three men came to see me at the pastor's welcome so they could tell me what had taken place.

Church Family - I praise the Lord for this story and all that it represents:

A new brother in Christ
A Connection Group that was accepting of a man struggling with his beliefs
A Connection Group Leader who took the initiative to share the gospel
A new believer who got to participate in leading another person to faith in Christ

Praise the Lord!

God is moving at FaithBridge and expanding His glory as we each draw near to worship Him in spirit and in truth and as more people come to faith in Christ! God is at work despite the depressed economy, being short-staffed as a church, limited budget dollars, etc. God is moving and for that I am grateful!

There are some things we would like to do as a church to better care for one another and reach those living around us who are far away from Jesus. Increased costs related to insurance, utilities and the like have eaten away what little funds for some things that we had just 2 years ago. With additional giving, here are some things we would like to do right away:

Hire a part-time Worship Leader.
Subsidize our annual AWANA dues making the cost for involvement less of a financial strain on our families.
Purchase additional pagers for our preschool families so the preschool leaders can more easily communicate with parents when their child has a need.
Host a marriage enrichment conference in the Fall to strengthen the marriages within our church and serve as an outreach to our friends and neighbors.
Add an additional support staff person for the Church Office to help us better support our professional staff and provide desktop and web support.

To do these things, two things need to happen. FIRST, we need to get caught up on our budget giving. Currently, we are about $9,000 behind for the year. SECOND, we need to increase our giving by 5%...that means if you typically give $100 per week, you would now give $105 a week.

I believe if each of us will increase our giving then we will have a far greater ability to care for our church family and more effectively reach our community. Please prayerfully consider what God wants you to do...here are some possibilities:

Begin giving regularly.
Give an extra one-time gift so we can become current on our budget for 2012.
Begin giving 5% above your current level of giving.

Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Let's put our hearts (and treasure) in what will last forever.

Dear Church,

We have come a long way in our ability to understand God's creation through Science from the time when God challenged Job to comprehend the heavens or, later, asked him, "Do you know the laws of the heavens?" (38:33) Physicists continually grapple with the scope and structure of the creation in ways few of us have (or can) consider. String Theory, M-Theory, Multi-Verse and Great Walls are all possible explanations of a creation that is not 3-dimensional as we have been taught, but 10-dimensional wherein our place in creation is far smaller and comparatively insignificant then we'd ever imagined. It is one thing to recognize through powerful telescopes that our galaxy is one of millions of others or that our sun is but an infinitesimally small star in light of others we have come to identify or that there are parts of creation that are millions of light years away...so far away that, traveling at the speed of light, it would take millions of years to arrive there...

Physicist, Stephen Hawking, recently published "The Grand Design" along with Leonard Mlodinow wherein they explore some of these theories that infinitely expand both the size and creativity of the creation...strangely, Hawking concludes, "M-Theory predicts that a great many universes were created out of nothing...their creation did not require the intervention of some supernatural being or god. Rather, these multiple universes arise naturally from physical law."

Hold on, Hawking! Theories are but our attempts to understand and Science has its limitations. Simply, if the universe arose from the "physical law" he mentioned...who created the "physical law?"

In short, all of this reminds me again that our world in context of creation and our lives in context of eternal time are but a bubble floating on the surface of the ocean...into that very small, fragile existence, the Lord speaks to us and says...

This is what the Lord says: "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Where will my resting place be? Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?" declares the Lord. "This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word." (Isaiah 66:1-2)

"These are the ones I esteem..." sounds a lot like the "blessings" we are studying on Sundays in the Cross Life Series. Being "commended because God has favored us" is an appropriate passion and quest. God defines who will enjoy His favor..."those who are humble and contrite in spirit."

Sunday, we will look more closely at this truth. Jesus said it this way, "Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted." Until then, be encouraged that God holds the heavens in the palm of His hand yet He knows you and wants a relationship with you.

Dear Church Family,

On Christian radio this morning there was a conversation about couples whose strategy to strengthen their marriages involved choosing to live in different cities...

While that idea has obvious problems that common sense and a simple biblical pattern of "leave and cleave" should easily correct, my real problem was with the radio personalities...

Repeatedly, different ones said some version of..."It's not my place to judge," or "To anyone doing this, I'm not saying you are wrong..."

Here's the deal...we have exalted personal autonomy to the level that our sense of correctness makes us unwilling to speak the truth. Honestly, the more they talked about the subject, the more frustrated I became.

So who gets to decide what is right or wrong? Is everything dictated by personal preference? Or, in Christian lingo, what "God is leading me to do?"

Who gets to say a believer is out of line when they claim God is leading them to not pay their taxes, abandon their family or marry their poodle?

Now, the same subject, but from a different angle...what right do I have to get up each week and speak on God's behalf as a preacher? Keep in mind, the title "pastor" doesn't give me any special rights or advantages.

The answer to this is simply to say that we have "TRUTH" and it is God's Word. Whether you are advising a friend, considering a big decision or I am delivering a sermon...the only authority any of us has is derived from God's Word.

Therefore, we need to be a people within whom "the Word of God dwells richly" (Col. 3:16), who have learned to speak the truth courageously, but with great love (Eph. 4:15) and we must be smart enough to realize that there is a big difference between being judgmental (taking God's place) and exercising judgment (applying God's truth to everyday situations).

Within the ranks of God's people, we must keep in mind that the greatest gift we can give one another is a loving, but clear reminder of God's truth on the matter at hand. Paul provides a sobering message to us in 1 Corinthians:

"It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: A man has his father's wife. And you are proud! Shouldn't you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this? Even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. And I have already passed judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present." (1 Corinthians 5:1-3)

Godly judgment requires we rightly apply God's standards to our lives and do so in a spirit of love as we call upon one another to live in a manner that pleases the Lord. That's what real love looks like!

Dear Church,

Sunday was an exceptional time together as a family...worship in the morning was inspiring, we had many guests who were warmly received and there was a buzz in the hallways as the FaithBridge Family simply enjoyed being together. At REUNION, we celebrated with 18 who were baptized, telling everyone of their newfound love for and devotion to Jesus. Brandi Giron was introduced as our new Safe Families Coordinator and offered an introduction to the ministry (click safe families to learn more). I took some time to talk to and lead the church in prayer about our debt situation - more about that in a minute. Then, we crowned Jeff Browne this year's "Chili King" and enjoyed a great time sampling 19 different chili entries. Here is a pic of Jeff enjoying his new fame and bragging rights:

In the service, I talked about where we are as a church in regard to our financial future. Each REUNION Service this Spring will be extremely important as we will pray together and consider important information about our options to move forward. This past Sunday evening, I addressed the importance that we remain focused on our mission to "boldly lead people to a transformed life in Christ" because that purpose is God's plan for a diverse group of His children to come together under one banner and act in harmony and unity. As Paul said to the struggling church in Philippi:

"Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel." (Philippians 1:27)

God is blessing our church family as was evidenced in part by the large number of people baptized in that service. As your pastor, I am thrilled when any person gives their life to Christ. However, I have to say that there is a whole new level of gratification and joy when a believer in our church grows in their own faith and is now the one leading another to Christ! That story line is occurring with greater and greater frequency because our church family is growing to see each and every day as a "mission trip" wherein the Lord is calling, directing and empowering us to live and be a witness for Him.

Now about the finances...here are our financials in round figures:

*8.8 million...Total indebtedness at the end of 2013 when our second bond matures

*2.0 million...Anticipated net proceeds from the sale of 10+ acres

*3.5 million...Maximum amount we qualify to refinance

*3.3 million...Amount that would remain unresolved if our land sale goes through and we were to refinance the maximum amount remaining

For perspective: God is continually moving and blessing in our church in wonderful, supernatural and life giving ways...but we have a financial challenge that prevents us from being as effective in ministry as we could be and could end our ministry if not addressed.

Roughly eighteen months ago, we commissioned a Strategic Planning Group to work and negotiate on our behalf as they were to explore ways to address our financial obstacles. Their mission was carefully described as follows: To recommend to the church an option that will allow us to align our financial resources with our spiritual mission.

The main question for our church at this point is simply, "How do we pray?" The best answer to that question is for the following to shape how we pray:

*Our mission remain God's mission

*Our values remain God's values

*Our understanding remain God's understanding...specifically that the church is people and facilities are a tool

*God protect us from Satan's schemes

Please join me in praying that God would enable us to accomplish the very thing that the Strategic Planning Group was tasked to help us do.

Church - I believe that one day I will be held accountable for our church (see Hebrews 13:17). I believe accountability will focus on how we did or did not glorify God in our faith, love and fulfillment of Christ's mission. Please join me in praying God would give us wisdom and unity. At the March REUNION, we will consider specific recommendations from our attorney about how we could proceed from here.

Dear Church Family,

Sunday evening is our REUNION Service. Whether or not you usually attend, I encourage you to be present at 6:00 p.m. There are several reasons:

FIRST - We will be celebrating with a large group of people professing their faith in the Lord through baptism!

SECOND - I will be addressing the church in regard to our long time financial commitments. It is important for everyone who loves FaithBridge to be in attendance so we are unified as we go into the future.

THIRD - Two words..."Chili Cook-Off!" Everyone is invited to bring a pot of chili, a bag of chips and a side item (i.e. sour cream, cheese) to share. There will be awards for the best chili.

Dear Church Family,

Yesterday was a great day at FaithBridge!

The newly decorated Worship Center was beautiful...many thanks to our Praise Team and friends for their hard work.

In the sermon yesterday, we looked at Matthew 4:12-25 which is a "prelude" to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. I used the illustration of the scrolling text at the beginning of each Star Wars movies...check out what our super creative Harold White created...click cross life video to watch.

In the message, I made the statement, "IF YOU'RE NOT FISHIN', YOU'RE NOT FOLLOWIN'!" Here are some great examples of how our church family is actively carrying out Jesus' commission to "follow me and (be) fishers of men."

We had many guests visiting for the first time. I had a couple worshipping with us from the Great Lakes region ("snow birds") tell me how much they loved our church and specifically mentioned a young woman named "Jana" who was so hospitable and called them by name!

I met a woman who has been attending worship and connection group for the last two months. She explained that she is a teller at a local grocery store and found her way to FaithBridge because a church member came through her line and personally invited her!

Last week, I told you the story of a man saved and baptized the end of the year who brought a lost friend...well, that friend was back yesterday and gave his life to Christ, along with 5 other adults!

You know, participating in Jesus' mission to seek and save those who are lost is a personal choice we can each make. Perhaps today you can begin with simply asking God to rescue the people in your life you know need to meet Jesus.

God is at work at FaithBridge and I am glad you are part of it!

Dear Church Family,

There has been a flurry of activity in the Worship Center this week as our Worship Team and friends have been working to enhance the acoustics and aesthetics of our place of corporate worship. Sunday morning is the big reveal...and I think you're gonna like it! (As a reminder, this remodeling is being paid for from funds originally borrowed six years ago that were set aside by the lender for capital improvements.)

Last Sunday morning, I reviewed some of the recent stories of ways in which God is at work in our church...here are a few of the highlights, as well as some other stories I have heard since Sunday:

Our Connection Group (CG) Ministry is the backbone of our church and continues to grow at a rate of between 10-15%. This is encouraging because CGs are our primary tool for caring for and mobilizing our church family. Click CG List if you are interested in learning more about our Connection Groups.

In addition, our ongoing ministries are going strong and doing great.

There is a great team of leaders caring for our Preschoolers and their families by creating a safe, warm, Jesus-filled environment where little ones have their first experiences with God's people and hear stories and songs from the Bible.

Our Children's Ministry is thriving as our leaders have created an encouraging and challenging atmosphere for our children to grow in their faith.

Our Youth Ministry is staffed by a committed team of adults who are challenging and equipping our teenagers to become men and women of faith and courage.

87 women meet weekly in Chronological Bible Discipleship (CBD) groups. They have committed themselves to read the Bible through in a year and meet in small groups to learn about the character and work of God throughout redemptive history. They gather to "train themselves to be godly" and I am hearing encouraging stories come out of the CBD groups.

Our CARE ministries are bearing fruit:

English as a Second Language (ESL) is ministering to a growing population of individuals and families newly arrived in Jacksonville from around the world...it is so much fun to listen to the different languages spoken in our hallways on Wednesday nights! There is a lot of laughter, love, relationships being built and English learned under the direction of our FaithBridge leaders.

Celebrate Recovery has grown to include 40-45 each Tuesday evening as many of our people are receiving the encouragement and teaching needed to walk in freedom from their past and in obedience to Jesus. Our partner ministry, The Refuge Group which is a sober living community, has seen a great number of people come to faith in Christ with a large number being baptized in our February REUNION Service.

Each month, a team of youth and adults go into our community as part of Backyard Missions to care for hurting people. Two weeks ago at Hemming Plaza, one of our men led a man to Christ who has been homeless for two years. Then, he helped him secure a place to live at The Refuge Group. I received an e-mail from him this week and he is now attending FaithBridge and has requested to be baptized in February.

I heard yesterday that we have had six families become part of FaithBridge through the work of our FaithBridge Fine Arts Ministry (FFAM). Using dance as a medium, our FFAM ladies have had a great format to minister to families we may not have met otherwise.

We have a large group of people (over 60) prayerfully considering participating in this summer's Mission Trip to Haiti where we will work to bless three local churches and help them grow in Christ and reach their community. Many of those praying about going with us are new in Christ themselves and saying, "here am I, send me!" Click Haiti to learn more if you are interested in going as well.

Many of our church members have come to Christ and are now growing in their faith and service to Him. As your pastor this is fulfilling as I watch and rejoice in these stories...

Last Sunday, we heard a testimony from Travis Haim who came to Christ last summer, was baptized at the beach in July, has embraced our 5C strategy for personal, spiritual growth (click 5Cs to learn more) and is now a spiritual leader in his home, part of our church family, serving in Preschool, growing in Christ through Yokefellows Men's Ministry, participating in a new Connection Group launch, a witness at work and praying about going to Haiti.

We had a guest in worship two weeks ago who asked for someone to discuss some questions she had about the faith...so, one our Connection Group Leaders met with her later that week and, over lunch, led her to personal faith in Christ.

We have a couple who came to Christ several years ago at FaithBridge and had the privilege this past weekend of leading their elderly grandmother to receive Christ as she is facing a frightening cancer diagnosis.

Last fall, we rejoiced with a man from our church who, himself, came to Christ two and a half years ago on Easter Sunday because he prayed with a friend to receive Christ...then, we baptized that friend in December. On Sunday, the man baptized in December brought a friend to church who he is telling about Jesus and praying that man will make his own decision for the Lord.

Wow...and that is not all. There are many other wonderful stories of the way God is at work in our church family, but I do not have time to tell you all of them. It is easy to see that we have many reasons to rejoice and to continually trust God as He leads, blesses and empowers us to serve Him.

There is an area of concern I want to address with you: we ended January in a weak financial position. The good news is, we spent less than was given, but we must watch this area of our church carefully - we have a budget that has been trimmed to the point that there is little margin for addressing shortages in giving. Our giving for the month of January was $13,123.08 less than our budget requires.

If you are giving faithfully, I want to thank you for trusting the Lord in this area of your life. If you are not giving or giving less than you know God intends, I can only encourage you to actively trust the Lord in this area of your life. Disobedience in regard to finances will affect all of us and cause the work and ministry of our church to suffer. Let's trust the Lord in this area of our lives as we participate in the wonderful work of God we are experiencing.

LOOK WHAT'S COMING...

1. LAST CHANCE: Next Wednesday is the last chance for men to join in on the spring semester of our Men's Discipleship Ministry called YOKEFELLOWS. Click Cultivate for class information and Spring 2012 to register.

2. REUNION is Sunday night, February 12 at 6:00 p.m. Several important things will happen at this month's REUNION Service:

BAPTISM...We have a number of people lined up to be baptized. If you would like to be baptized, please call Melissa Penrod at 220-2727.

CHURCH DEBT...I will be speaking directly to the church about our long-term debt issue. It is important for all of you who are committed to the FaithBridge Family to make it a point to be in attendance.

NEW MINISTRY...We will be introduced to a new ministry of FaithBridge called "Safe Families." I am personally very excited about this and eager for you to hear more and learn how you can consider CARING for hurting children and families in our community.

CHILI COOK-OFF...Everyone is invited to bring a pot of chili, a bag of chips and a topping (sour cream, cheese, etc.) to share during our after service fellowship.

BACKYARD MISSIONS...On Sunday afternoon, February 19, our backyard missions team will be headed out once again. There will be a brief meeting at 2:00 p.m. prior to leaving at 3:00 p.m. If you need more information, please contact Clara Berrios at clarby06@comcast.net.

PLEASE PRAY WITH ME...

1. That Jesus would continue to be the hero of FaithBridge!

2. For God's word to come alive and be a guide to our church as we launch into the Cross Life Sermon Series from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.

3. For me as your pastor...for God's wisdom and protection, clear direction for our church and a passion for the things that matter most to Him.

4. For our church to remain on mission and rejoice in the journey of faith and ministry we enjoy together. Pray that we will resist the temptations to relax in our urgency and focus on reaching the lost. Dear Church Family,

After meeting the FaithBridge Family in worship, the next step for most is to CONNECT. God made us for Himself...but He also made us for one another.

To have the rich, meaningful, encouraging, supportive and Christ-centered relationships we all desire, we have to do something on purpose.

1. FACE YOUR FEARS - We all have fears that keep us isolated...fears of rejection, being found out or even ignored. Life is full of risks and this one is worth taking!

2. CHOOSE A CONNECTION GROUP - It can be intimidating to walk into a new group of people...but this group is different than most. THEY WANT YOU and have a place set aside just for you. If you want to read over a list of Connection Group options, click CG List.

3. CHOOSE AND COMMIT TO A LOCAL CHURCH - I readily acknowledge that there are many churches in our community where God is at work...but this is definitely one of them! I personally teach our MEMBERSHIP 101 Class for those who are considering and exploring joining FaithBridge. The next class is this Sunday afternoon from 4-6 p.m. Space is still available if you are interested in attending, but child care is now closed. Click 101 for more details.

4. INVEST IN CHRIST-CENTERED RELATIONSHIPS - This means we make it a priority to faithfully attend our Connection Group, pray for one another regularly, turn polite conversation to God's work in our lives and, simply, make time to nurture these relationships in our lives.

As people in our community are increasingly isolated due to moves away from family, distrust and fear, prevelance of social media and a "fortress mentality" about our home life, the church - GOD'S PEOPLE - have a unique gift to offer one another and the lost around us...the gift of genuine friendship.

The Psalmist said, "God sets the lonely in families." Are you lonely? Do you need to make your church family a greater priority? Maybe you are well connected and cared for so you could look around at who you can draw in and bless.

Boldly leading people to transformed lives in Christ...it's not just a motto, it is who we are.

Dear Church Family,

Last Sunday morning I talked to you about our mission and vision of raising up the "OAKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS" described by Jesus in Isaiah 61:1-3. That growth has several implications:

PERSONAL SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Together, we use our 5Cs (click 5C Strategy for more information on those) as a pattern for growth. Like a work-out regimen it helps us grow into a balanced and mature follower of Jesus. It is always good to know what area of your growth is lacking so you can make plans to develop in that area. Do you know what you need to work on most?
CELEBRATE...involves preparing and participating in weekly worship.
CONNECT...involves Christ-centered relationships. We encourage these in our Connection Group Ministry.
CULTIVATE...involves growing in knowledge and obedience to Jesus through daily time in prayer and Bible study.
CONTRIBUTE...involves using the unique gifts and abilities God has given you to serve and encourage our church.
CARE...involves loving, praying, caring and telling others about Jesus.

There are some upcoming events to help you grow in a few of the 5Cs:

CONNECT - Membership 101 is a free, two hour class that will help you better understand our church and make an informed and prayerful decision about joining. The next one occurs on Sunday, January 29th. Click 101 to register.

CULTIVATE - Maturity 201 is a free, two hour class that introduces you to the personal spiritual disciplines. These tools are designed to equip for a meaningful time alone with God each day. The next one occurs on Sunday, January 29th. Click 201 to register.

Adult classes that encourage you to grow in this area occur on Wednesday evenings throughout the Spring. The new groups launch the first week of February. Check out the CULTIVATE Brochure located in your bulletin this Sunday for more information.

CARE - One experience I want for every FaithBridge member is a high-impact, short-term mission trip. Our next one is scheduled for July 14-21, 2012 to Port Au Prince, Haiti. SPIRITUAL GROWTH OF YOUR FAMILY

As I was reading this morning in Isaiah 44, I was encouraged by verses 3-4 which say:

"For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessings on your descendants. They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams."

Parents - please take the initiative to train, model and encourage a love for Jesus in your children. Of all the responsibilities in your life, none is greater than this one!

SPIRITUAL GROWTH OF OUR FAMILY

Each one of us has influence...and we can use it to encourage others in their walk with God. I hope that the children and young people of our church will have many heros of the faith from within FaithBridge who model a personal relationship with Jesus. You have the opportunity to bless and encourage others toward Christ-likeness. Do you have a ministry to the family at FaithBridge? Do you understand that every interaction is another chance to influence someone in our church toward a faithful walk with Jesus? Do you recognize that we are counting on and need you?

"They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor."

Last Sunday was a wonderful time of worship and reflection on living as clay on the Potter's Wheel and in His hands. It is so good to be reminded of the Lord's sovereignty and plan as we enjoy the good times and persevere through the difficult. Every Sunday, we gather to CELEBRATE God's goodness, remind ourselves that it is His kingdom and glory that matters most, then offer ourselves in service once again. Consider a New Year's resolution to be in worship every Sunday unless providentially hindered!

NEW SERIES BEGINS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5TH. Have you noticed that serious minded believers have different opinions and approaches to living for Christ while part of a fallen world? This new sermon series is built on Jesus' sermon on the mount from Matthew 5-7 and will help us know how He wants us to approach our faith while here on earth.

CARE is an important part of our strategy to help every believer grow to full maturity in Christ. A vital part of learning and growing a heart to CARE for other people is our Missions Ministry.

For those who have never been on a short-term mission trip, I want to invite you to travel with me to Haiti this Summer, July 14-21. If you are willing to pray and consider participating, make plans to attend the orientation meeting this Sunday at 6:00 p.m. in the KidsROCK Theater. There is no obligation for you to attend and the information will help you make a prayerful and informed decision.

Dear Church Family,

Call me weird, but I love the New Year...I know it is just a date on the calendar, but a fresh slate, a sense of "newness" and a reminder to make some of the changes I've intended to make makes this a personal favorite.

If you were not able to be in worship last Sunday, I brought a message from Proverbs 3:5-6 about the four conditions God places on us before He will "make our paths straight." Of course, what anyone of us needs more than anything is God's blessing and direction in our lives. If you would like to listen to that message, click messages to go to our website.

On Sunday, January 8th, we will have a unique worship experience. While I want it to be a surprise, I will ask that you be on time or early so as to enjoy the whole thing!

GREAT NEWS!

Last December, Rick Cleveland attended our REUNION Service and described the ministry of SAFE FAMILIES. I shared how God had first laid this ministry on the heart of Lee Summerlin. As a new believer facing a diagnosis of terminal cancer, his desire was to make an eternal difference with the limited days he had left on earth. Lee's disease rendered him unable to lead the ministry, so I asked the church to join me in praying as to whether God had someone else in our church who could assume the mantle of leadership...

I am thrilled to announce that Brandi Giron has responded to God's call and agreed to serve as FaithBridge's Safe Families Coordinator!

You will be hearing more from Brandi in February so you can better know how to pray and consider being involved.

THANK YOU, CHURCH FAMILY!

On behalf of our Church Staff, thank you for giving toward last Sunday's Christmas Offering. We as a staff are blessed to serve such a loving and generous church family!

The Pastor's View

Dear Church Family,

There is a picture in my home of a four year old with large blonde curls and a bright smile positioned carefully behind her two year old brother in a sailor suit ...(sorry GW). When that four year old got up to lead in worship last Sunday...wait, you didn't see her? She looks strangely like a beautiful, confident 18 year old woman now (but she will always be that willful, wonderful four year old to me...). As I watched she and her friends lead worship, I was startled...and grateful.

Startled by how much time has passed, at the recognition that her life, and ours, will soon change as she closes one chapter and opens a new one. Startled by the growth that has occurred since that four year old had her picture taken.

Startled...and grateful. Grateful for the faith and conviction she has developed, for her love for Jesus, music and her family. Grateful for the gift and blessing she is in my life. Grateful for the fears she has faced, phases she has gone through...and emerged from, excitement she has about the future and expectations that God has a plan for her life.

You may be wondering why I am using this letter for such a personal reflection. Well, we are a family...Rachel, the children and me, but also together as a church. There is something sweet and wonderful about reflecting on my daughter's life to this point and her future with the Lord. In much the same way, we enjoy rich memories together and celebrate each new chapter of life together as a church family.

We have now been together for four years..FaithBridge and the Whites. There have been a lot of laughs, tears and growth together. My prayer is that we will continue to care for one another as a family of faith...continually startled and grateful as the work of God among us grows and advances.

This holiday, I hope you will enjoy your family...and our family as we love the Lord, love each other and serve Him together.

NICARAGUA MISSION TRIP 2012

2012 is your year!

Each summer we take a team to various cities in Nicaragua to partner with the churches there to reach the lost, feed the hungry and bless those churches. It has been a life-changing experience for many of the FaithBridgers who have participated.

Now it is your turn! The dates have been set for 2012...

July 14-21.

There will be an informational meeting on Sunday evening, January 15th at 6:00 p.m. in the KidsROCK Theater.

Dear Church Family,

Vision and perception are two entirely different things. In last Sunday's message, I mentioned that one challenge we face in training up the next generation in the faith is related to this...they often have keen insight into God, His Word and His church. The problem is the lack of life experience leaves them with limited depth perception. Our challenge as parents is to help them make sense of and appropriately interpret and apply the truths they are being taught.

But teenagers aren't the only ones who struggle in this area...

In Isaiah 5, God compares himself to a man who buys a field then works diligently and carefully to create a valuable, fruitful vineyard. To do so, He cut down the trees, removed the stumps and rocks, built a wall, a tower and a wine press, then selected premium vines to plant. In verse 4, God says, "What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I expected it to provide good grapes did it produce worthless ones?"

Just so we are clear...those vines producing worthless grapes represent God's people. Let me ask you: Are you producing the fruit in your life that God intended when He chose, called and saved you? What else could or should He have done for that to happen?

God's Word is telling us that when we examine ourselves and recognize we are falling short...the problem isn't with God...it's the person in the mirror.

Isaiah 5 goes on to describe the kind of lives that God's people often pursue instead of serving Him. Verse 8 says, "Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field till no space is left and you live alone in the land." Sadly, chasing accomplishments and possessions only leaves us with an aching emptiness.

SO WHAT IS WRONG? Remember the conversation about vision without perception? Isaiah 5:12b says, "...they do not pay attention to the deeds of the Lord, nor do they consider the work of His hand."

Do you recognize the many way that God provides for, guides, protects and blesses you? Consider daily thanking and praising Him for the specific things you can identify as His handiwork. I think you will find that the more you look, the more you will see...and the more you see of God, the more you will love, trust and desire to serve Him.

It is also PJ Night so wear your pajamas for bonus points. Students (6th-12th Grade) will have cake & drinks in the Refuge. Students are encouraged to dress in their Christmas finest and there will be an "Ugliest Sweater" contest that you don't want to miss.

PRAISING GOD

1. For a fun time with Scott Davis last weekend. We made many new friends and were told that six people said "yes" to Jesus for the very first time.

2. For a loving and accepting church family. We have a new friend in worship the last few weeks who struggles with a medical condition that causes him to make noises and gestures during worship that could be distracting. I have been thrilled to watch the love and understanding our church family has offered him!

3. For the many people who love the Lord and serve Him by serving the FaithBridge Family each and every week.

ASKING GOD
1. For direction as we make plans for our ministry together in the next 5 years.

2. For protection from Satan's schemes.

3. For unity and harmony built on a shared commitment to honor God first and foremost as we seek to love each other and spread the gospel.

4. For a solid and steady growth in our Connection Group Ministry! This is the best measure of our efforts to "boldly lead people to transformed lives in Christ!"

Dear Church Family,

I once heard a college football coach in an interview complain that his personal success and livelihood was entirely in the hands of a bunch of 18-20 year olds...in a strange way, that resonates with me.

Not that my work, fulfillment and success depend on older adolescents, but because I am entirely dependent on forces outside myself to fulfill what God has put in my heart to attempt.

Some days, that realization is exhilarating and on other days, if I am being entirely honest, leaves me empty and anxious. I want my life, my time, my treasure and my talents to make the greatest possible impact in eternity that brings glory to God. I measure that impact by the condition of my own heart and my influence over others to know, love and passionately obey Jesus Christ.

Herein lies the problem...I am just a guy. I have some unique talents, as much time as anyone else and a finite measure of resources to use to fulfill this mission. The problem is, at the end of the day, I hope to see hearts and lives changed and there is absolutely nothing within me powerful enough to accomplish that.

Now, there are many things I can do...I must do...for lives to be changed. But, if I am the only one working, if the Spirit of God does not move and heal and draw and convict and fill and strengthen...then there's nothing.

This morning , as I read Isaiah 2 in my quiet time, my heart lept as I read verse 3 which says:

"Many people will come and say, 'Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways so that we may walk in his paths.' The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem." (NIV)

I hope to be part of it!

Actually, we aren't so different. With the exception of a few pastor friends who read this, few of you are in "vocational ministry." However, many of you share my desire-my passion-to make a meaningful, enduring and real contribution to the Kingdom of God. You desire to see your children grow to be men and women of courage, faith and conviction. You have family members, co-workers, friends and neighbors living in darkness; angry, despairing, cynical and with no real hope for the future.

Like me, you are dependent. No matter what you do or say, you cannot change anyone's heart or life-only God does that work. However, there are some things you MUST do to participate in God's work around you.

WE MUST PRAY...like heaven depends on it. We pray for God's will, God's way and God's work. We pray passionately because of the great importance that God do the work.

WE MUST DRAW CLOSE...spending time with God asking Him to cleanse, heal and transform us as we spend time in prayer and His Word.

WE MUST OBEY...and do (or stop doing) what He says to us in His Word rather than "getting around to it." We must be decisive in giving, speaking, going and doing as God directs.

WE MUST STAY FOCUSED...on honoring and pleasing Him over any and all people. At the end of Isaiah 2, the writer says:

"Stop trusting in man, who has but a breath in his nostrils. Of what account is he?" (vs. 22) (NIV)

My friends, do not buy into the helter skelter business of life that helps you stay active, but distracted from what matters most.

I encourage you today to PRAY-DRAW CLOSE-OBEY and STAY FOCUSED...then look for the miraculous hand of God at work around you.

Dear Church,

The longer I live, the more grateful I am. Perhaps it is the perspective that comes with life experience or maybe a little more maturity, either way, gratitude goes a long way.

Gratitude goes a long way toward nurturing the warm, healthy relationships we desire.

Gratitude goes a long way toward worshiping God in a manner that is appropriate and pleasing to Him.

Gratitude goes a long way toward a good perspective on the problems we currently face.

Gratitude goes a long way toward personal outlook on life and stable emotional health.

For what are you grateful? As you consider all that you require and enjoy in life, who is responsible? How best can you express your gratitude...words of affirmation, a token of appreciation, a poem, song or investment of time together?

I encourage you to MAKE TIME in the next few days to carefully count your blessings then intentionally thank those responsible.

"I will praise God's name in song and glorify Him with Thanksgiving."
(Psalm 69:30, NIV)

Dear Church,

Last Sunday's morning and evening services were particularly sweet. Many pastors say jokingly, "Don't resign on Mondays because Sundays can be very discouraging." WE ARE BLESSED...God is actively working in our church family and it is a joy to come together in worship!

Sunday morning we will continue our time in the Book of Ruth. Many have expressed how much this book has blessed them and given them both encouragement and specific direction as they walk with God through tough times. WARNING: Sunday's message will be from Ruth 3 and the story gets a little personal! The inerrant and inspired word of God is certainly for real people, living in a real world and addressing real challenges that require a genuine faith.

New to FaithBridge? I want to personally invite you to invest two hours this Sunday afternoon to learn more about church and ask God whether these people need to become your church family. This is such an important step that I teach the class myself. Click 101 to learn more and to register for MEMBERSHIP 101.

24 HOUR MISSION TRIP

On December 9th-10th, our Student Ministry will partner with "Words to Works Ministries" to feed the hungry, clothe the needy and share the good news of Jesus Christ. ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM?

THANK A VETERAN! Happy Veteran's Day!

Dear Church,

As I have studied the Book of Ruth for our current sermon series, one thing has stood out to me: the importance of a spiritual family and their place in God's plans to provide for us during a time of crisis.

As the "Jesus" figure in the story, Boaz is a kind, generous, protective family member who the Lord used to help rescue Ruth and provide her with a meaningful future.

One of the things about FaithBridge for which I am grateful is our loving care of one another and big-hearted hospitality to the new people God brings our way. Jesus described the importance of this "love in action" as the second greatest commandment:

Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:37-40)

I want to commend you, church, for living out a genuine love for the Lord and showing that your faith is real by loving one another.

Because of the number of people who call FaithBridge their home, we are organized into a series of smaller groups called "Connection Groups." Here are a couple of things I want to address about these groups:

If you have not found one, there are some wonderful options. Keep visiting around until you find one that "fits." Click CG to view a list of classes.
Pray daily for your Connection Group Leader and class members.
Look for ways to actively encourage and support the people in your Connection Group.
Actively welcome and include people new to FaithBridge so they can enjoy the love and family that has come to mean so much to us.

The only other item related to our FAMILY I want to mention is our 101-MEMBERSHIP Class. This is an opportunity for me to get to know you on a more personal level, share specifics about our church and answer your questions. The saying we use is: "God put children in families"...and we would like to help you as you decide whether FaithBridge is your "family" or not! 6. For God to raise up an individual or couple with a heart for children and families in crisis by serving as our Safe Families Coordinator.

As many of you know, in September our church missed the August mortgage payment due by September 15th. Soon after that, our Stewardship, Personnel and Strategic Planning Teams met together in order to address the issue. An attorney was consulted and that team agreed on the following plan to help us move forward:

We will make regular partial payments on our mortgage of approximately $20K each while ensuring we remain current on our operations and ministry expenses without doing anything "new." By making an affordable and regular monthly payment, we are demonstrating to the bondholders our ability to pay our debt at a certain level while maintaining our ministry focus.
Simultaneously, we are seeking to renegotiate the terms of our bonds. This will allow us to grow and expand our ministry while still meeting our financial obligations.

Thank you for continuing to make this a matter of prayer as we stay focused on our mission of loving the Lord, loving each other and reaching the lost!

The Pastor's View

In his book, "Radical Together," David Platt said:

"God does not involve us in his grand, global purpose because he needs us. He involves us in his grand, global purpose because he loves us."

As we go about our busy lives, it is important that we step back and answer the important questions of...

What really matters?
Why do I matter?
What do I do that matters?

In Ecclesiastes, King Solomon reflected:

"I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet, he will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless...What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun?" (Ecclesiastes 2:18-19, 22)

When we recognize the true futility of our work, only then can we truly appreciate what an amazing gift God has given us...the privileged opportunity of doing something that is life changing in content, eternal in scope and supernatural in substance.

In other words, you have been invited to participate in God's plans to rescue the lost, be strengthened and empowered by Him for that work and enjoy the lasting reward, both now and in heaven, of doing something that TRULY MATTERS.

As a church, my desire for us is to each live daily as if we were on a MISSION TRIP. (If you haven't had the opportunity yet...consider what it's like to only have to focus on one thing...leading lost people to Christ!) To be successful, we will each need FIVE TOOLS in our personal TOOLBOX:

TOOL #1 - A testimony of how God saved and changed us.

TOOL #2 - A presentation of God's story. You can memorize a gospel presentation or use a tract to share. (Recommendation: The Four Spiritual Laws)

TOOL #3 - An ability to start a spiritual conversation.

TOOL #4 - An ability to lead a person to choose Jesus and invite Christ to be Lord and Savior.

TOOL #5 - A "Top FIVE" list of people for whom you pray regularly to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus.

In our MISSION 401 Class, I review and train in how to develop and use these five tools. If you have yet to attend, our next class is on March 25, 2012. Meanwhile, use the tools you already have and join me in asking God to use each of us to accomplish something in our life that truly matters!

24 HOUR MISSION TRIP - On December 9th-10th, our Student Ministry will partner with "Words to Works Ministries" to feed the hungry, clothe the needy and share the good news of Jesus Christ. information packets along with a schedule of events are now available in the Atrium. TOUGH TIMES...they are a part of life and can be personally devastating. For people of faith, we step back and begin to ask hard questions...

Where are you God?
What did I do wrong?
Why did You allow this to happen?
How do I trust You and what does that look like?

This Sunday we begin a sermon series from the Book of Ruth that I believe will help you to answer these questions.

Personally, I have been surprised at how much is in this little, often forgotten, book of the Bible. It is a story about two women and their journey from tragedy to faith. I have been incredibly blessed while studying in preparation for this series and am eager to share with you all that God's Word has to offer.

There are many of you who have people around you who need Jesus in their lives. Sunday is a wonderful opportunity for you to minister to them. God's hand is on Ronnie and he has been greatly used by God to lead the lost to faith in Christ!

Sunday evening, our REUNION Service with Ronnie Hill begins at 6:00 p.m. Following, you are invited to stay and participate in a meal. This is a great chance to build friendships, celebrate with those who have made decisions and be hospitable to our guests. Our Hospitality Team has been hard at work planning for this Sunday. The theme for our meal will be "What Can You Make in a Crockpot?" Bring your best breakfast, appetizer, soup, dip, meal or dessert. If you are not able to bring a crockpot item, please plan to bring a bag salad, rolls or dessert. Be creative! Items may be brought to the Atrium prior to the start of the worship service.

Dear Church Family,

Our sermon series "GAMES PEOPLE PLAY" on relationships from the book of Proverbs is now complete. It obviously met a real need for many based on the feedback you have given me. Thank the Lord for His Word and clear guidance in such an important area of our lives.

Now that "GAMES PEOPLE PLAY" is over...you may be wondering, what is next?

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16th - This will be a unique worship experience that will include a celebration of the Lord's Supper and an offering designed to assist some in our fellowship who have fallen on hard times.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23rd - Special Guest, Ronnie Hill will be with us in the morning and again that evening for the REUNION Service. After the evening worship, we will be sharing a meal in the Atrium. The theme is "What Can You Make in a Crockpot?" Everyone is encouraged to bring their favorite crockpot meal or dessert to share.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27th - There are still a couple of spots left if you would like to join Pastor Paul and Rachel at the First Coast Women's Services Annual Giving Life Banquet. E-mail melissa@wearefaithbridge.com as soon as possible if you are interested in attending.

Please pray with me...

As you know, we are facing some large financial challenges as a church. Spiritually and missionally, this is an incredibly healthy and vibrant church. However, we have some financial issues that threaten our effectiveness and are a constant distraction. In my own prayer life, I felt like the Lord led me to a story in the Old Testament as an example of how He wants me to lead our church through these times. I invite you to take time to read and pray through this story from scripture:

For the Pastor, Staff and leaders in our church to be fiercely committed to doing what is right in the Lord's eyes and cling to Him for everything we need. (2 Kings 18:1-6)
For the Pastor, Staff and church leaders to lead courageously and demonstrate conviction even when it means doing difficult or unpopular things. (2 Kings 18:1-6)
For God's favor and blessing on our work as a church to strengthen God's people, love one another and reach the lost with the love of Christ. (2 Kings 18:7-8)
For our church to deal faithfully with God (corporately and individually), confessing and repenting of our failures before a Holy God so His hand will not be against us. (2 Kings 18:9-12)
For the Pastor, Staff and church leaders to be wise, shrewd and able to make difficult decisions in order to keep our church focused on the spread of the gospel. (2 Kings 18:31-37)
For our church to focus on the Lord and not be intimidated by the obstacles and enemies that threaten our church and God's work in and through her. (2 Kings 18:17-30)
For our church to prayerfully support and trust the Pastor, Staff and church leaders when difficult or unpopular decisions have to be made. (2 Kings 18:31-37)
That we would be a prayerful people who carefully and faithfully bring all our fears, challenges and problems before the Lord. (2 Kings 19:1-19)
That God would lead us clearly as we pray and plan so we can know our next steps were ordained by God Himself. (2 Kings 19:20-34)
That God Himself would work in our church and on behalf of our church in a way that would give Him glory and everyone watching would know that HE IS GOD ALONE. (2 Kings 19:35-37)

Deacon Pastor Qualifications

As we read through 1 Timothy 3, we see qualifications for spiritual leadership...then Paul explains why the standard is set so high...

Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
-1 Timothy 3:14-15

FIRST - Paul's reference to "true godliness" suggests there is an artificial version out there! God's people and a watching world need Christian leaders to practice what they preach.

SECOND - "Godliness," by definition, describes a God-ward life, wherein that person lives in a way that honors God and reflects His character.

THIRD - The source of this godliness was a mystery to the first century church and many today. It comes from a relationship with Jesus and develops out of that fellowship.

As we nominate men to serve our church as Deacon Pastors, it is important we do so because we see the character of Christ in them. The following list of qualifications is a good prayer guide as you look around our church and consider who to recommend:

Filled with the Holy Spirit - Acts 6:3
Strong Christian Character - 1 Timothy 3:8-10
Husband of One Wife - 1 Timothy 3:12
Tither of His Income - 1 Timothy 3:8;Malachi 3:10
Proven to the Church - 1 Timothy 3:10
Faithful to Attend Worship - Hebrews 10:25
Truthful and Trustworthy - 1 Timothy 3:8
Sound and Wise Judgment - Acts 6:2
Example of Christian Home Life - 1 Timothy 3:12
Supportive of the Pastor and His Ministry - Acts 6:1-7
Teacher of Scripture - 1 Timothy 3:2

A few of these may leave you wondering, so let me help clear up any confusion:

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT - this person has a Christ-like love and strength about them that comes from daily surrendering to His authority and control.

HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE - this means he is a "one woman kind of guy" and is clearly devoted to his wife.

PROVEN TO THE CHURCH - this simply means that this man has developed a reputation for godly Christian character.

Please keep in mind that our Deacon Nominations should be returned to your Connection Group Leader no later than Sunday, October 30th.

Halloween Outreach

Our mission is boldly leading people to transformed lives in Christ. Problem is, it can be tough to get close enough to have an influence over our neighbors! Many of our church family have mentioned it has been tough to get started. In our fast-paced, garage doors down, "don't trust strangers" world, it can be tough building new relationships with lost people. Halloween affords us a unique opportunity to interact with and get to know our neighbors by meeting them on their terms, offering the best "treat" of all! Instead of assembling at the church for an alternative event, I encourage you to be salt and light in your own neighborhood.

For those who may be concerned, we are not endorsing Halloween, we are exploiting it! There are few other times during the year when all your neighbors are outdoors, with their kids, available to talk and actually coming to your door where you can have a conversation. Last year, some in my family received children at our door while I walked the neighborhood with our youngest, her neighborhood friend and that girl's daddy. It was a wonderful time that ended with him asking me to pray for him about some family concerns. Friends, let's redeem a holiday with a dark side and ask God to use us to offer Jesus to our neighbors!

As you know, being the "salt and light" Jesus described requires we actually engage lost people. Halloween is a wonderful opportunity to look your neighbors in the eyes, celebrate their children and be a witness by offering candy and a "Did You Ever Carve...a Pumpkinhead for Halloween?" brochure that will tell them about Jesus and invite them to FaithBridge!

Our Children's Ministry will provide these "Did You Ever Carve...a Pumpkinhead for Halloween?" brochures for you to include in your contributions to the pint-sized trick-or-treaters that will ring your door bell! You can pick these brochures up in the Atrium October 16-30.
